Padma Bridge is a multi-purpose road and railway bridge under construction on the Padma River in Bangladesh. Through this, Shariatpur and Madaripur districts will be connected with the iron ore of Munshiganj. This will connect the south-western part of the country with the north-eastern part. For a developing country like Bangladesh, the Padma Bridge is going to be one of the biggest challenging construction projects in its history. The two-timer Ed steel and concrete truss bridge will have a four-lane road at the top and a single railway at the lower level. The country's largest bridge is being built in the width plan.
According to China Major Bridge Engineering Company, the contractor constructing the Padma Bridge, the Padma Bridge will be ready for traffic by April 2022.
Economic importance
The proposed Padma Multipurpose Bridge project will create a direct connection of the South - western part with the center of the country through a specific route through Mawa-Jajira Point. This bridge will significantly contribute to the social, economic and industrial development of the relatively underdeveloped region. The project will directly benefit more than 3 crore people across an area of about 44,000 SQ km (16,000 SQ mi) or 29% of the total area of Bangladesh. As a result, the project is being considered as a very important infrastructure for the country's transport network and regional economic development. The bridge will have future rail, gas, power lines and fiber optic cable expansion. If this bridge is built, the country's GDP will increase up to 1.2 percent.
Construction costs
The total cost for the construction of Padma Bridge is 30,193.39 crores. These costs include construction of bridge infrastructure, river governance, connecting roads, land acquisition, rehabilitation and environment, salaries and allowances, etc. According to the agreement of the bridge department with the finance department of Bangladesh, the government has given a loan of TK 29,793 crores for the construction of the bridge. The bridge authority will pay it at 35% for 1 year at an interest rate of 1 percent. The employed China Major Bridge Engineering Corporation (MBE C) is carrying out the work. Soil testing and dredging has been going on for the last four months for river training. The bridge will have a total of 42 pillars. There will be six piles under each one. Steel spans will be placed on the pillars. The bridge will have a total of 41 spans. Work on the Padma Multipurpose Bridge is mainly divided into five sections - construction of main bridge, river training, two connecting roads and infrastructure (service area). Sino Hydro Corporation of China was hired for the training of the river and Abdul Moneymaker Limited of Bangladesh was awarded the contract for construction of two connecting roads and infrastructure. In October 2016, more than a year and a half after the start of the main construction work, on November 28, 2020, the construction of 42 out of 42 pillars was completed. The final (41st) span of this bridge was laid on 10th December 2020. Upon completion, this bridge will be the longest bridge in Bangladesh. The new completion date of the bridge is expected to be in June 2022.
Controversy and rumors
In July 2019, rumors spread on social media that people would be involved in the construction of the Padma Bridge. As a result, many mentally unbalanced people were beaten up and handed over to the police in different parts of Bangladesh . Later, the bridge construction authority sent a Notification to the media on July 9, 2019 stating that the incident was rumored and baseless. In this case, the researchers advised the bridge authorities to disseminate all the details of the construction of the bridge to the public.
